Our Journey Towards A connected atheist Community
About the Atheist Student Community
Established by the New Zealand Association of Rationalists and Humanists we exist to support atheist students to form groups and clubs to connect with each other and engage with big ideas and big questions without the belief in gods or the supernatural.
Embrace secularism
Join us bringing non-religious people together to develop their own views and an understanding of the world around them.
Celebrate Diversity
We believe is a secular society. We believethis is the only life we have. We make sense of the world through logic, reason, and evidence.
Our Mission: Building a National Atheist Student Community
Our mission is to create a vibrant community for non-religious students, advocating for a society where personal beliefs are respected, and student life is guided by evidence and fairness.
We strive to provide a 'third place' for friendship and discussion, especially for students and younger adults seeking community without religious doctrine.
Our Core Values
Humanism
We believe that the universe is a natural phenomenon with no supernatural side, and that we can live ethical and fulfilling lives on the basis of reason and humanity. We place human welfare and happiness at the centre of their ethical decision making.
The Scientific Method
We place our trust in the scientific method, evidence, and reason to discover truths about the universe. We believe that knowledge and truth are ascertained by using reason and logic, and not by divine or supernatural revelation.
Freedom of Thought and Expression
We support the right of every person to freedom of thought and belief, to develop their ideas, express their opinions, have the opportunity to consider a range of views, and to change their minds. We believe that free expression is essential for the resolution of disagreements openly and democratically, for individual fulfilment, for the advancement of knowledge, and for social progress.
An Open Society
Our ideal society is the ‘open society’ – one in which individual liberty, including freedom of belief and expression, is reinforced by a deliberate policy on the part of government and all official bodies of disinterested impartiality towards the many beliefs, philosophies, and political viewpoints within society, so long as they confirm to agreed minimum standards and conventions and are worthy of respect in a democratic society.
Our governance and leadership
The NZ Association of Rationalist and Humanists has established this community to reach out to students and young adults to provide support and connection with other like-minded people.
The NZ Association of Rationalist and Humanists is a charity and incorporated society. Our council are a dedicated team of passionate rationalists and humanists from across New Zealand who all volunteer their time to run the organisation.
